A few weeks ago I was in Dallas and stayed at the Hilton Anatole where a trade show was being held. Outside of the Anatole, by the park, there were two panels of the Berlin wall standing erect. It’s great to see that although the wall had been torn down, panels have been preserved for posterity sake. Standing up close to the wall I was surprised how tall it actually was. I only hope the graffiti does not fade away.

Brooklyn based hotographer Tom Kirsch – better know by his nickname Motts – has assembled some amazing photos of abandoned hospitals, hotels, and prisons over on his site opacity.us. In many cases his photos are the last images taken before the buildings were demolished which makes them all the more interesting.

The two shots featured above are of the Sterling Hotel in Wilkes-Barre PA. The first photo was photographed in August of 2005. The black and white photo is from a 1908 postcard. The hotel was eventualy demolished in February 2007.

To find out more about Motts, check out his about page.

One of my fondest memories was the dinner at Antoines. There were about twenty of us and we had the Rex room all to ourselves. The food and company were amazing. Antoines has been around since 1840. Now that’s some history.

Tonight, while rummaging through some of my flickr photos, it dawned on me that I snapped these photos 10 years ago! All were taken on a very early Sony digital camera. Each image, at full resolution, is a whopping 72dpi and 1024 x 768. Very primitive compared to today’s cameras. The photos were taken in and around Miami, Florida.

There is a grainy dull quality that I just love. To see all the photos from this set, click here.
